Photography Essays & Images | Beaumont Newhall

If my photography library caught fire and I could only save one book… it would be this one. The special thing about it is that Beaumont Newhall had the great idea of putting together a collection of founding texts on photography. These are texts that have been published in periodicals, books, interviews, testimonies, etc. Many, perhaps most, are quite obvious, such as texts by Talbot, Archer, Elizabeth Eastlake, Emerson, Stieglitz, Dorothea Lange and many others, but it’s so convenient to have them all together in one volume, well edited and with lots of photos. There’s always a short introduction by Newhall that positions the author and the context of the publication. Below is the index with a list of all the precious contents.
