João Paulo dos Reis Neto is an amateur photographer whose work focuses on analog photography and the study of traditional photographic processes. His work is based on the use of film, with an emphasis on black and white recordings, valuing natural light, composition and the materiality of the image.
It is produced with medium and large format cameras, including different models such as Mamiya, Hasselblad, Kodak Medalist, Yashica, Voigtländer, Zeiss Ikon, Graflex, and Rolleiflex, which contributes to the tonal precision, richness of detail and technical rigor of the set.
Focusing on Rio de Janeiro, he produces essays and records that articulate landscape and urbanity, bringing together images of neighborhoods and historic areas, from the coast to the central region. His photography observes elements of architectural heritage, geography and everyday urban life, such as in this small exhibition, with churches, buildings, boats and natural formations, composing a visual panorama that highlights the relationship between city, time and occupation of the territory.
In parallel with his photographic production, João Paulo maintains a consistent activity as a collector of cameras and historical items related to analog photography, gathering pieces that cover the period from the late 19th century to the 1990s. This collection and research contribute to expanding his technical and historical repertoire, strengthening his understanding of the different media and languages that have crossed photography over time and directly influenced his practice.
His production values the authorial process of analog making, from the choice of equipment and film to the finalization of the image, reaffirming his commitment to photography as a material support and documentary record.
You can follow his work on Instagram @jpreisneto2018. He also has a YouTube channel, Vintage Camera, with around 100 videos where he shows part of his collection of analog cameras, presenting their main characteristics according to the decades in which they were manufactured, as well as tips and information that can be useful for young analog photography enthusiasts.
