When Louis Daguerre announced his discovery of photography in 1839, he lamented that it was not yet possible to take portraits due to the very long exposure times. But he expressed confidence that this possibility would soon become a reality and that everyone would be able to have their images immortalized. In fact, professional studio portraiture soon became one of the most important genres of photography and endures to this day, even with the convenience of cell phones and digital technology.
