“Look first, read later.” Before reading the curatorial text, take plenty of time to look at the photographs of Nagoya taken by Jiro Asada. What do they reveal? Setting aside the satirical or aesthetic detachment so common in street photography, this exhibition explores the desire to… well, look first and read later.
How do you put your heart into photos when the camera only records what’s in front of it? How do you make your work personal, intimate, subjective… and still speak a language that everyone understands? There is no right answer to these questions, but Tiago Pedro’s photos of Cariri are certainly a happy solution to them.
Like any contemporary photographer, Antonio Neto uses digital technology in his daily work. But in this exhibition, he presents a series of images taken not only on film, but on large-format film (18×24 cm). There is something special about analog photography, but don’t look for it in the “image quality”—you have to look beyond that.
Grand places, once abandoned, are haunted by poetry and memory. They provoke a defiant wish for their revival. But is it possible? To keep vigil over the past, or to resurrect it to a new present?
